 Wanted to love it, but a few big misses Mar 07, 2010
The good:
- Un-boxing experience was very 'Apple-like', only greener. That boded well.
- Includes two separate antennas and four different dock adapters. Very complete.
- Fit, finish, materials, attention to detail, heft, button feel, etc. all SCREAM quality.
- The sound is *fantastic* for a radio it's size.
The middling:
- Plugging my iPhone in triggers and alert that says 'This peripheral may not work with iPhones. Turn on Airplane Mode?'. Turns out it's just fine in 3g or WiFi, but will create that buzzing beeping feedback with EDGE. No worries, my place gets 3g just fine, I just have to click 'No' every time I dock it.
- Shoutcast iPhone app doesn't work with the speaker. It gives a 'no volume available' alert on the iPhone, and no sound comes out. Bummer. Not sure I can blame the Vers for that, though.
- Manual is decent, but very wordy and repetitive. It needs a good edit for 'Apple' feel.
- The buttons are laid out in a grid that looks nice but doesn't really help me use it. The buttons I have to use only every once in a while (like configuring favorite radio stations) are right next to the ones I use every day (like toggling brightness). They feel the same, even though one toggles through five different things with just a touch and the other requires me to hold it down for a few seconds to even activate. My Sony clock gets that right - they put those buttons in different places.
- The dial for setting stations has inconsistent behavior. Sometimes a quarter turn doesn't even shift .1 of a station (i.e. 94.8 to 94.9), other times it'll go a full two places. Made trying to set up the radio really frustrating.
- The iPhone alarm just plays the last song you were playing. It would have been nice if I could have, oh, created a playlist named 'vers' on the iPhone and it played that.
The bad:
- Toggling the clock brightness is stupidly finicky. The switch is tiny, and mixed in the middle of the bank of 8 function buttons, next to the alarm switches and music. So, at night, in the dark, when I want to make the clock dimmer so I can sleep, I have to fumble around and hope I don't turn on the radio, or turn off one of the alarms. Big pain. I use that feature every day. Just put it on the Snooze bar like everyone else!
- The brightness toggle for the clock isn't on the remote. Why not? That's exactly where I need it most!
- There's a blue LED for the 'Power' on the top that is so bright I had to cover it.
- You mean to tell me if I only have 2 'Favorite' radio stations set up, that clicking the little 'Favorite' button on the remote will cycle through all 10 slots, even the 8 with just dead static? Stupid stupid stupid. That linear nonsense should have died with the 8-track. Give me 5 favorites, put 5 buttons on the remote, done. That's the most I'd ever need considering it's a dock for a friggin' iPhone.
It does SO well on the sound and build quality, and falls down miserably with routine every-day use. I get the feeling most of them didn't actually bring these home and use them themselves while they were prototyping. Maybe the engineers, but nobody else.
It's just made me appreciate the thought put into my current clock radio. The search continues...
 Great iPod dock and clock radio Feb 16, 2010
After not having luck with another iPod dock / clock radio, I went for the Vers instead - it's compact and pretty and seemed easy to use. Turns out it's perfect. Nice sound, the FM radio works (except for occasionally I have to move the antenna around to get rid of static), the dock charges my ancient iPod, and it has all the features I need in an alarm clock (dual alarm, snooze, sleep). It's definitely pricey, but it's a nice product and will, I hope, last a long time.

The Vers 1.5RX clock radio provides modest enjoyment. Perhaps its best features are its high quality display with unusually well formed characters and its expensive walnut cabinet. The display brightness has three well chosen levels. Its controls are medium friendly and the sound quality is clear with just a hint of bass. AM performance is good, helped by its external loop antenna. FM sensitivity is low even with its external wire antenna but performance is otherwise good. The remote has many buttons but only a few function if an Ipod is not being used.
